VW and Tesco have today announced it will be developing the largest UK retail electric vehicle (EV) charging network.
The network, powered by Pod Point, will provide another 2,400 EV charging bays across 600 different stores within the next three years.
Charging and range anxiety is one of the biggest points on tension associated with the ownership of an electric car.
More development like this could help to make the ownership of an electric car more attractive and easier for many.
Customers will be able to charge their electric cars using a standard 7kW fast charger for free or benefit from the use of a rapid 50kW charger for a small cost in line with the market rate.
Volkswagen has previously stated its ambition to become a leader in e-mobility.
This includes the firm’s pledge to sell one million electric cars a year across the world by 2025.
It will begin this product offensive with the ID hatchback in 2019 followed by a number of different ID models.

The charge points will be installed over the next three years
Currently, the carmaker also manufacturer the e-Golf and e-up! but both cars have limited range.
Geraldine Ingham, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen UK, said: “This incredibly exciting partnership with Tesco, powered by Pod Point, underlines the scale and ambition of our electric car programme in the UK.
“Working with these partners to provide such an extensive network of EV chargers should leave no one in any doubt about the Volkswagen brand’s wholehearted commitment to an electric future.”
Jason Tarry, Tesco CEO UK & ROI, said: “This is part of our wider commitment to addressing the environmental challenges that matter most to our customers, colleagues and communities.

“We want to be the leading electric vehicle energy provider and to support our customers with more sustainable solutions. Our EV network provides a sustainable choice for our customers and charging while they shop is another little help to make their lives easier.”
Erik Fairbairn, CEO of Pod Point, said: “This agreement represents a 14% increase in the number of public charge bays in the UK and is a monumental day for electric vehicle drivers. It is a massive leap forward for the UK and a significant step in our mission to put a Pod Point everywhere you park.”
A UK pub chain is also planning to introduce a number of rapid electric car chargers.
Marston’s Inns and Taverns is looking to introduce 400 rapid EV chargers, powered by 100 per cent renewable energy.
The chargers will be free to use for customers
Each point will allow up to three cars to charge at each site at any one time.
Andy Kershaw, head of facilities management and projects, Marston’s, said: “Our goal is to become the UK’s most environmentally efficient pub business.
“By partnering with innovative and customer-focused organisations like Engenie, we’ll continue to hold ourselves and the sector to the highest possible environmental standards.”
Each point will be a 50kW rapid charger which is compatible with all EVs currently on sale and is capable of recharging the battery to 80 per cent in just 30-60 minutes.
The points will be made by Engenie and will be able to be used with just the tap of a contactless payment card.
Patrick Sherriff, Business Development Director, Engenie, said: “Our national network of rapid chargers is having a significant positive impact on local air quality; another feather in the cap of Marston’s’ already impressive long-term environmental commitments.
“At the same time, our easy-to-use rapid EV charging points will put the customer at the centre of the EV transition.”
Justin Meyer, General Manger, SWARCO eVolt said: “Marston’s is a forward-thinking company that puts its customers first.
“Engenie, with its customer-centred aporoach, is the perfect fit for Marston’s and we are delighted to have been selected as their chosen solution provider.
“Engenie’s decision to work with SWARCO eVolt is testament to the high quality products and services that we offer our customers.”
