Skoda has released a new set of spy shots of its all-new hatchback the ahead of its release later this year.

Alongside the shots which show what the outline of the vehicle will look like the Czech carmaker has also confirmed a list of specs and features it will receive.

Firstly, the firm has confirmed that the car’s design which is heavily camouflaged in the spy pictures, will echo the design language displayed on the hatchback which was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year.

Skoda has also confirmed that Scala could enter the market by as early as early 2019.

Bernhard Maier, ŠKODA CEO, said, “With the new ŠKODA Scala we are opening a new chapter in the ŠKODA compact car segment.

“It is a completely new product which sets benchmarks in this segment with regards to technology, safety and design.

“The Scala perfectly embodies the ŠKODA‑typical smart understatement. We are convinced that the Scala has the best chance to redefine ŠKODA’s A-car segment.”

Scala will also be the first Skoda to bear the ‘SKODA’ block lettering on the tailgate instead of the company logo.

It has hatchback proportions but the carmaker states it will be spacious inside.

The new compact model measures 4,362 mm in length, is 1,793 mm wide, and 1,471 mm high and a long wheelbase of 2,649 mm.

It is expected to have one of the largest boots in its segment with a capacity of 467 litres which can be increased to 1,410 litres with the rear seats folded down.

LED headlights and tail lights will be an optional extra when the vehicle launches, as well as an electrically retractable tow bar, an umbrella compartment and ice scraper located in the fuel filler cap.

Powering the car will be a choice of five different engines, all of which comply with the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard.

They include three petrol and two diesel units. 

All engines come with direct injection and a turbocharger as well as Stop/Start technology and brake energy recovery.

Petrol variants are a 95PS 1.0-litre TSI, 115 PS 1.0-litre TSI and a 150PS 1.5-litre TSI.

The 95PS engine comes with a five-speed manual transmission while the other two variants can be specified with a manual six-speed gearbox or automatics seven-speed DSGH as an option.

All petrol engines are equipped with a particulate filter to filter out some of the harmful pollutants emitted from the tailpipe.

Diesel options include a four-cylinder 1.6 TDI with a power output of 115 PS produces 250 Nm of torque. this powertrain comes with an SCR catalytic converter with AdBlue injection as well as a diesel particulate filter as standard.

The classic comes with two different driving modes – Normal and Sport – which changes the ride, chassis and adjusts the hock absorbs to offer a different response from the car.

A number of driving assistance systems will be available with the new car which includes Side Assist, Blind Spot Detect, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Front Assist including City Emergency Brake.

Christian Strube, ŠKODA Board Member for Technical Development, emphasized, “The new ŠKODA Scala is based on Volkswagen Group’s flexible MQB platform.

“This not only makes it possible to use the state-of-the-art drive and chassis components, but also allows access to numerous new driver assistance systems that – until now – have only been seen in higher vehicle segments, either for the first time or in enhanced versions.

“In combination with numerous passive safety systems, the assistance features elevate the ŠKODA Scala to a very high level of safety.”
